INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING: PREPARATION FOR PAINTING

This 7 week class is basic, designed for beginners, as well as those who have had some prior experience in drawing and wish to again explore its concepts or prepare for painting classes. Using the still life as primary subject matter, the class is progressive, with an emphasis on developing a clear understanding of line, shape, value, composition and spatial relationships. While applying these principles, learn to create simple, well-balanced drawings as you work in a relaxed environment.

Intermediate & Advanced Drawing/ Mixed Media Sketching and Drawing

Bring the drawing medium you like best, be it pastel, colored pencil, conte, charcoal, graphite, or a variety. In this class, we will work on composition, spatial relationships, color use, and modeling. Get your ideas on paper, have some fun, try something new, gain some skills, and train your artist’s eyes!

Intermediate & Advanced Drawing
BEGINNING DRAWING

This is a foundation course for students to develop skills in seeing and interpreting shape and form. Students will learn through practice, repetition of basic principles, experimentation, demonstration, keeping a sketchbook, and interaction with studio peers. A strong emphasis is placed on learning a visual language as it relates to line, composition, value, and basic perspective. Students will gradually advance to be prepared for continuing drawing as a medium in itself and develop drawing skills that will help make strong paintings a possibility in future classes.

Beginning Drawing

INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED DRAWING

Build confidence and expand your ability to draw! Through use of different materials and drawing skills, students become comfortable with drawing as a process. Topics include: Compositition, proportion, light, color, the illusion of space, and the exploration of expression. Using wet and dry mediums, you will work on still life, self-portraits, and other imagery, while strengthening your own voice. Experience the act of drawing as a way to reason through creative process, learning how the simplest graphic marks can express complex concepts.

SOFT PASTEL

This course will explore the expressive immediacy and rich depth of color that can be achieved using soft pastel, a unique medium where pure pigment is applied without the use of tools such as brushes or pallet knife. Emphasis will be on developing compositions from photographs, with subjects ranging from still life and landscape to portraits and the figure. This class will reinforce and build on the student's knowledge and skill in the use of color theory, principles of composition and design, and drawing and perspective. Appropriate for artists of all levels of experience.

Portrait Drawing

Learning to draw a portrait is a fantastic way to improve your drawing skills in all aspects. In this course you will learn the importance of proportion of the face, value control, measurement and shape recognition. We will spend time on individual features, quick gestures, and long studies from master portrait artists. Returning students may choose to bring in their own photo reference to work from in order to create a more personalized drawing.
